East Central High School is the sole high school of the Sunman-Dearborn Community School Corporation, located in St. Leon, Indiana. The school was established in 1973. The school serves approximately 1350 students in grades 9-12 and has a 22:1 student-to-teacher ratio. An equal balance of male and female students is enrolled. The school population is predominantly white Caucasian with only 1% diversity. A total of 18% of the high school population falls within the free/reduced status. The faculty consists of 63 teachers, 4 administrators, 3 counselors, and 12 teaching assistants. The school has a 22:1 student-to-teacher ratio, and operates on a schedule of 7 periods a day. The year is divided into two semesters with two nine-week grading periods per semester. Teachers continually strive to provide the most up-to-date curriculum incorporated with modern teaching methods. In the spring of 2011, East Central High School was recognized by Washington Post as “one of the nation’s top 1,900 schools” and has been recognized as an exemplary school by the Department of Education. In 2012 and 2013, East Central High School earned an “A” letter grade by the Indiana Department of Education. The campus includes numerous classrooms, an abundance of computer labs, a 1,500-seat Performing Arts Center, a field house, and state-of-the art athletic facilities. Students in grades 9-12 are served by three full-time counselors, and students are assigned to counselors alphabetically by last name. Students in grades 11 and 12 are eligible to attend the Southeastern Career Center in order to pursue a career/technical program. The curriculum offered by East Central High School provides students with a wide range of academic and educational opportunities. The school offers 59 core curriculum classes, 90 elective classes, 62 career/technical courses, 15 Advanced Placement courses, and 15 dual credit courses for a total of 50 college credits. Students have the opportunity to earn dual college credits from Indiana University and IVY Tech College; participate and test with the College Board for AP courses, and earn workplace certifications in over 36 areas. Graduates are well prepared to pursue post-secondary education and/or the workforce after graduation. Over 80% of the graduates achieve an Academic Honors Diploma, Technical Honors Diploma, or Core 40 diploma. Coupled with the 80% of the graduates pursuing post-secondary education and training and 5% enlisting in the military, ECHS provides a solid educational foundation to students for future success. ECHS enjoys a very active student body with well over 50% of students participating in one or more extracurricular activities. With over 35 extracurricular clubs available, students are able to in a variety of activities designed to meet the likes and talents of a diverse population. Nearly one-third of the student body participates in one or more of the 20 varsity sports offered at ECHS. East Central is a member of the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference (EIAC), and has won 28 all sports championships.
